Sensitivity of reflected radiance to surface normal orientation

چکیده

Given the illumination and the surface normal at a point on a convex surface, the effect of small changes in surface normal direction on observed reflected radiance is examined. A signal-processing framework suitable for the hemispherical geometry of the problem is applied to discuss surface reflection in terms of convolving incident illumination with the reflectance function. Depending on the surface material’s reflection properties as well as on the incident illumination distribution, normal direction deviation may or may not be noticeable. Expressions are derived to quantitatively evaluate the amount of change in reflected radiance. Different scenarios exemplify the results. The presented theoretical results have implications for shape-fromshading technqiues as well as for scene-based compression methods.

Remote Sensing of Tidal Situation by Monitoring Changes in Suspended Sediment Concentration in Surface Waters

Collecting information on suspended sediments concentration (SSC) in coastal waters and estuaries is vital for proper management of coastal environments. Traditionally, SSC used to be measured by time consuming and costly point measurements. This method allows the accurate measurement of SSC only for a point in space and time. Remote sensing from air-borne and space-borne sensors have proved to...

The Effect of Instrument Polarization Sensitivity on Sea Surface Remote Sensing with Infrared Spectroradiometers

The sensitivity of Fourier transform infrared spectroradiometers to the polarization state of incident radiance can become significant in radiometric measurements of a partially polarized source such as the sea surface. At off-nadir incidence angles and wavenumbers below about 2750 cm21 (wavelengths longer than 3.6 mm), radiance from the sea surface is partially vertically polarized, because th...

Recovering Material Reflectance from Polarization and Simulated Annealing

This paper presents a novel image-based method for estimating BRDF information. The goal is to determine the dependence of the reflected radiance on the surface orientation for any given illumination direction. The proposed method consists of two stages. In the first stage, the polarization state of light reflected from an object of unknown shape is analysed using a linear polarizer and digital...

Green's Function Method for the Radiative Transfer Problem. I. Homogeneous non-Lambertian Surface.

An application of the Green's function method to the one-dimensional radiative transfer problem with a non-Lambertian surface is described. This method separates atmospheric radiative transport from the lower boundary condition and allows expressing a solution analytically for an arbitrary surface reflectance. In the physical sense, the Green's function represents bidirectional atmospheric tran...

Challenges in Methane Column Retrievals from AVIRIS-NG Imagery over Spectrally Cluttered Surfaces: A Sensitivity Analysis

A comparison between efforts to detect methane anomalies by a simple band ratio approach from the Airborne Visual Infrared Imaging Spectrometer-Classic (AVIRIS-C) data for the Kern Front oil field, Central California, and the Coal Oil Point marine hydrocarbon seep field, offshore southern California, was conducted. The detection succeeded for the marine source and failed for the terrestrial sou...
